Morningstar Brand & Employee Experience

Beginning in 2019 I joined Morningstar’s as part of the Talent & Culture team, to lead our global design efforts in develop Morningstar’s internal brand perspective and expression. As the team and the company has grown our brand work has begun to focus on five core pillars that define the employee experience—Workspace, Technology, Programs & Policies, Culture, and Community Engagement.

To ensure the work would resonate with employees and was authentic to Morningstar, our project process involved developing core narratives that defined our voice and perspective. These were informed by interviews with employees and stakeholders to gauge sentiment, opinions, and viewpoint. Creative workshops & design charrettes with key stakeholders helped define goals and direction and allowed our colleagues to have a voice and feel included throughout the creative development process.

Below are examples from each of our pillars that demonstrate how we knit together these individual groups to bring humanity, clarity, playfulness, and elegance to the myriad brand touchpoints that create the employee experience.

Global Values Awards Art Prints. These began as a collaborative project called ‘Visualizing Our Values’—a way to bring Morningstar designers together to have fun, collaborate, and get back to basics, by answering a question: How do you visualize a value or belief? Each illustration is inspired by a quote from someone known for their activism, writing, or leadership. The quotes were selected for their eloquence, spirit, and alignment with Morningstar’s six core values. The collaboration took place between April and June
of 2020 and included designers from Morningstar’s software, marketing, and brand experience teams.
